On Friday, July 4th, 2014, Des Moines band Gloom Balloon performed on the main stage at 80/35 music festival (http://80-35.com) in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. Their show featured an appearance by the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus (http://dmgmc.org) singing on a new, unreleased song, “Show You My Love”. As a backdrop to the show, 6 prominent Des Moines-based visual artists (Van Holmgren, Ramona Muse, Jen Mitchard, Derek Lambert, Ashley Tape Fleming, and John Huffman) collaborated in a live painting on an 8’x8’ canvas surface. Near the end of the show, the audience of approximately 2000 people was asked to take their “gloom” and blow it onto the painting to dry it, at which point a previously concealed taped-off portion of the painting was stripped to reveal the word “GLOOM”.
This painting is now being auctioned off online via silent bids, starting at $100. All proceeds will be donated to the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus to support its concert programming. Bids can be made by emailing Patrick Tape Fleming at gloomballoon@gmail.com or messaging the band via their Facebook page (http://facebook.com/gloomballoon). View current bids on the band’s Facebook and Twitter (http://twitter.com/gloomballoon) and website (http://gloomballoon.com/charityauction).
